Fernão Pó is a family winery of Fernando Po, resulting from the joining of two families related to winemaking for generations, Freitas & Palhoça. Since its founding by Aníbal da Silva Freitas in the ’50s, the winery has grown attached to the local winemaking tradition. At the time the wine was part of everyday life, inseparable from food, sold at the cellar door. Visitors arrived on weekends to stock up for the whole year, shared stories and snacks. And became friends. It is this legacy that the family wishes to maintain, creating genuine wines made for the table, genuine under the direction of João Palhoça in oenology and Custódio Palhoça expertise in viticulture. The winery has undergone steady improvements, having a capacity of about 1000 tons of grapes. Fernando Po is famous for the quality of the grapes that grow on the plain soft sands in microclimate a temperate by the Tagus and Sado rivers. Red grape varieties, in particular, reveal its best here. So they dominate the 60 ha of vineyards of the family: Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tannat. The white varieties being Fernão Pires, Syria, Verdelho, Viozinho and Muscat.
