Palmela

Pedestrian Trail

The pedestrian route starts at Palmela Castle, a national monument since 1910. Found within the walls of the Castle you will find the Municippily Tourist Office; the ancient Santiago Convent, which is currently a Pousada de Portugal (historic inn); the Church of Santiago; the ruins of the Church of Santa Maria, where the Board of the Studies of the Order of Santiago is located and the Municipal Museum, with the Archaeological Space, the Space for Military Transmissions and the Visitors’ Reservation, the “Sculpture of São Tiago” are integrated in the.

Walk downhill until the Church of S. Pedro and enjoy the façades of the building of the Town Hall. Follow in the direction of the Largo Duque de Palmela and observe the Pelourinho (pillory) and the Church of Misericórdia.

Historic Center

Continue the route along Rua Hermenegildo Capelo, until the Largo do Mercado. Return to Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, go ahead, cross Largo da Boavista and go down the stairs. At Rua Heliodoro Salgado, visit the Casa de Atalaia (1), an old wine cellar with a coffee shop. Take the oportunity to meet also the accommodation Casa de Atalaia, a little further up at the same street.

Go down the Rua Heliodoro Salgado e enter into the Rua do Passadiço. As you reach the Largo Marquês de Pombal, go down the Escadinhas dos Caracoleiros, follow along Rua Augusto Cardoso and continue in the direction of the Largo do Chafariz D. Maria I (Fountain).

Near you can visit the wine cellar Xavier Santana (2) and know their wines on a guided tour located just outside the town of Palmela and with superb panoramic views over the Vale de Barris e Serra da Arrábida. Taste the Moscatel de Setúbal from this wine cellar!

Cross the Joaquim José de Carvalho Garden and climb until the Largo de S. João Baptista. In this square, you can admire the exterior of the Chapel of São João Baptista, the Bandstand, the Municipal Library of Palmela, the São João Cine-Theatre and the Wine Route House.

This building was an old cellar, converted into eno-tourism information point, is also wine and regional products shop. Come visit us and have a Moscatel de Setúbal tasting.

Go up now Rua Gago Coutinho and Sacadura and find another ancient wine cellar, Casa Agricola Assis Lobo (3).

Located in the historic center, has 50 years of history. Through its modern winemaking center in Fernando Po, this wine cellar produces wines exclusively from own grapes, from the best areas of the Palmela’s region. Run a Moscatel Roxo tasting!

Quinta do Anjo

Get into your vehicle and return to the Chafariz D. Maria I. Continue anda go towards Serra do Louro. Go straiht ahead  and meet Quinta do Piloto (4) with its wonderful panoramic view of Lisbon. Make a guided tour and a white wine tasting.

Near by, visit the Centro Moinhos Vivos (Windmills), There where you will have the opportunity to go on donkey rides – a “burricada”, as assigned – through the hills of the Serra do Louro, in addition to enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Natural Park of Arrábida, Vale dos Barris and Palmela.

Continue in the direction a Quinta do Anjo and make a sto at Adega Camolas (5), at your right. By the way, turn left and visit the Fortuna Artes e Ofícios Handicraft Centre, where the pottery is handmade and treated genuine way. Try one of the workshops of ceramic arts.

Also in Quinta do Anjo, visit the wine cellar Venâncio da Costa Lima (6), you will find this wine cellar established at 1914 to received open doors. Family business of traditional manufacturing, where there is still a small workshop cooperage. In the stage room wines can enjoy the large wooden vats with a capacity of about 250 liters of wine and the old distillation cauldrons. Do a wine tasting and discover this winery!

Right next Venâncio da Costa Lima, find Lima Fortuna, a producer of various liqueurs.

Cabanas

Quinta do Anjo is land of cheese makers that produce and sell the famous Queijo de Azeitão (cheese), recognized quality certified product made with raw sheep thistle and salt.

Follow in the direction of Cabanas, where you will cross plantations of vineyards. The Route I ends at the Capela de São Gonçalo (Chapel), classified as a building of Municipal interest.
