Palmela
The start begins at the Largo de S. João Batista, next to the Wine Route House, an old wine cellar converted into a central reservations for visits to wine cellars and wine and regional products shop. Have a coffee and a taste of Moscatel de Setúbal.
Go down the Avenida da Liberdade and when you get to the crossroads, follow right in the direction of Setúbal. When you pass the traffic lights of the settlement of Volta da Pedra, a few metres ahead, turn left in the direction of Poceirão. A few meters ahead, turn left again, entering the road 533 and follow sign Poceirão.
Stop to make a guided visit to the Adega de Palmela (1). Enjoy the great vats and the bottling line, finish with a wine-tasting session, not forgetting to try the Moscatel de Setúbal. At the time of harvest, get know the destination of the grapes, from its assessment on receipt, by measuring the likely extent, through crushing until the entry in deposits for subsequent fermentation.
Continue in the direction of Algeruz until the International Kartodrome of Palmela. Apart from the existing sporting activities, the Herdade de Algeruz houses a wine cellar that was distinguished in 1937 by the National Federation of Wines, as the “most modern wine cellar in the country”. It’s not possible visiting.
Close to the Kartodrome, you can also visit the Montado Golf Course, one of the five 18-hole golf courses existing in the region, which has a unit of accommodation.
Leaving Golf do Montado, continue to EN 10, turning right following the indication to Moinho de Maré da Mourisca. Where the landscape is dominated by small farms and stretches of forests of pine trees and cork trees. Visit the exterior of the Moinho de Maré da Mourisca (tide mill), and if you have opportunity do a small ramble around the area surrounding the mill and the small port build on piles.
Retake the E.N. 10 in direction of Águas de Moura, continuing straight ahead towards Poceirão. At your right side, you can visit the wine cellar Filipe Palhoça Vinhos (2). This small wine cellar is a familiar business and the tour allows you to enjoy the whole production process. Since the vineyard, bordering the entrance of the wine cellar, until the final result, with wine tasting in the tasting room comfortable.
Poceirão
Retake the road until Poceirão, follow the indication to Fernando Pó and follow the railway crossing. Continue in front, turn right to Fernando Pó, where you will pass by various plantations of vineyards.
Before reaching this wine-producing village, you will find Quinta do Monte Alegre (3), a renovated wine cellar that follows its natural evolution with a commitment to offering wines and wine tourism experiences, from the origin of wine production to wine tasting, always in contact with the privileged terroir and unique rural tranquility.
A little further enjoy getting to know the wine cellar Fernão Pó Adega (4) and its restored tasting room where you can also recover the breath to continue on this route.
Further ahead, on the left, you will find the Casa Dupó (5). Wine cellar from the 70’s, with Algerian type aerial cement vinification vats and underground cement deposits for wine aging. The cement deposits were lined with IPOX. The winery was fully restored in 2018, still maintaining the characteristics of its initial construction.
Retake the road and after the next railway crossing, turn right to Rua Manuel João Freitas and visit the wine cellar Casa Ermelinda Freitas (6). A family wine cellar boasting four generations of wine-growing traditions. During the visit you can meet the wine cellar, the living stage, teaching vineyard and the museum. Do a regional snack with five wine tasting tasting cheese and sausage.
Return to the access road to Fernando Pó and head towards Santo Isidro de Pegões. On your left, you will find the centuries-old Herdade de Pegos Claros (7), with its old wine cellar, installed in a building that was restored at the end of the last century, with the particularity that its large wine presses are still used for treading the grapes on their first day of fermentation.
